Guilty Gear Strive crossplay beta impressions — Smooth sailing or rocky waters?

Now that basically every fighting game already has or is getting rollback netcode, the next step is bringing everyone together through cross platform play.

Arc System Works is doing just that this weekend with Guilty Gear Strive's crossplay beta test, but is the feature and online upgrades ready to rock or do they need more time in the oven?

Thanks to the beta being free for everyone to try, I was able to test out Strive's crossplay performance on both PC and a base PlayStation 4 where the online seemed to be even better than what's in the game right now.

Across both systems, crossplay matches felt buttery smooth with only a few minor hitches on PC, but I blame that on not optimizing my graphics settings and not the game itself.

While in lobbies, players on the same system as you will appear with a PlayStation or PC symbol on their profile, and those on the other shows up as what looks like a shuffle button to designate crossplay.

It's simple and easy to understand though we are curious if they'll specify which console players are on when the Xbox version releases next year.

The best part about the experience besides the smooth matches was what felt like an overall improved stability to the lobbies.

Sure, they still look and basically work the same as before, but I didn't run into a single connection error when trying to start a match, which is generally the most frustrating part about playing online.

I can't speak on this being fixed for everyone, however, so hopefully everyone else has seen a noticeable improvement on that front too.

My only real gripe is the game will still interrupt your matches when a floor rating update occurs, but they admittedly didn't say anything about changing it.

There's really not much more else to say. The netcode is great. The crossplay is great. The lobbies are still the lobbies except they actually work.

Strive's full crossplay update is set to release sometime this Fall though it seems pretty much ready to go now.

The beta is still up for a few more hours, so if you haven't gotten around to it already, there's time to get some matches in whether you own the game or not.
