WOOD-RIDGE – County title number 11 was one IHA had waited for.

Six years after their last Bergen County title (a long time in IHA years) the Blue Eagles romped to the championship on a sparkling Sunday afternoon with a convincing 8-0 win over Ramapo at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex.

Blue Eagles senior pitcher Jocelyn Moody added to her resume for North Jersey Player of the Year with a one-hitter and a three-run home run that took the wind from Ramapo in the second inning.

IHA was seeking revenge after losing to the Green Raiders in last year’s county semifinals.

“Last season losing was the worst feeling,” said Moody. “That drove us to win it this year and really motivated us to have a lot of energy from the start.”

“I think last year, after losing to them in the semis the kids had something to prove,” Blue Eagles coach Diana Fasano said. “They remember. We learned a lot from that game.”

IHA (27-1) added to its county-best 11 titles, all coming since 1992. The Blue Eagles are the last Bergen County team still active in the State Tournament and face Mount St. Dominic on Tuesday in the North Non-Public A final

“We have big things left,” said Fasano. “We get to enjoy this moment, but we practice tomorrow.”

“This senior class wanted this real bad,” Moody said. “I think that’s what makes it such a great team is how the underclassmen wanted it for us too. It’s such a special thing to have our senior year be the year we come through with it.”

Ramapo finishes the season 24-5.

The Blue Eagles offense got started in the second inning with four straight singles with one out. Freshman phenom Gabby Shadek opened the scoring with a hard RBI single to left to score Noelle Urbaniak. IHA added another run on an error. Sofia Valente was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Sophia Noriega smacked a deep fly to center for a sacrifice fly.

The hit parade continued in the bottom of the second. Cara Kochakian tripled to lead off the inning, Gabby Park followed with an RBI single. Shadek singled, then Moody went down low and drove a ball over the left field fence to make it 8-0.

“She’s just got it all,” said Fasano of her senior pitcher.

IHA only had one more hit the rest of the way as Ramapo senior McKenna Lont settled in, but the Green Raiders couldn’t rally.

“We came in and we wanted to have fun. We realized this is our moment,” said Park. “Coach was telling us to enjoy it and that we shouldn’t be nervous because we’re used to being on the big stage.”

The Blue Eagles stunned Mount St. Dominic with a late comeback to win the sectional title last year. The Mountain Lions are reigning Essex County champs and the game Tuesday will be a marquee battle.

“Big game,” Park said. “They definitely want it bad, but I think we want it more.”

Fasano said it’s tough to go from one ‘trophy’ game to another in 48 hours, but she hopes her team can carry over what it did Sunday.

“They’re a great team,” Moody said. “These are the games we have been working for all season to get to. So there’s no reason to be nervous. This is what we have been working for.”
