Teams of four to seven people carried American flags up and down the CCC Trail in the Palo Duro Canyon State Park on Saturday as part of the annual Iwo Jima Flag Run. The event is held each year to honor those who survived and sacrificed at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. The elevated climb is almost the same amount of distance that soldiers had to climb to raise the American flag at Iwo Jima. The battle is considered the bloodiest battle in U.S Marine history.
